Although humans are naturally collaborative, collaboration can sometimes require a conscious effort. In an environment of different generations, professions and cultures, such as that of an international organisation like CERN, collaboration can be as much a challenge as an asset.
In my first year as Ombud, I have become aware of tensions between generations. The contrasting styles of communication and the diverging expectations and values of people of different generations sometimes clash rather than complementing each other.
Sometimes it’s the method of communication that makes these tensions worse: an e-mail sent with several colleagues copied in can add fuel to the fire in cases where a face-to-face discussion could have quickly defused the situation, provided that each party explained the problem in a clear and calm manner, respecting the principles of non-violent communication.
This is why collaborative communication is a key skill for managers and their teams. It helps to ease tensions, make the most of everyone’s contributions and create a respectful and inclusive working environment.
A prerequisite for collaborative communication is a clear intention to cooperate and build together. Such communication requires a safe space where everyone feels free to speak up, make suggestions and give constructive feedback, a space where curiosity is fostered through openness to unexpected points of view, and where everyone’s opinion is valued: remember that the most shy and retiring team member may have great ideas to communicate. These are a few examples of the conditions needed to encourage collaborative communication.
The behavioural skills component of the CERN competency model, built around five key values, can help you to do just that – bear it in mind!
If you would like to talk about this subject or find out how the above information can be applied in a particular situation, please contact me. As Ombud, my main task is to provide a non-official channel for conflict resolution, as well as to give impartial help and advice. My role is also to offer my opinion on the implementation of the Code of Conduct.
Thank you for your attention, and see you soon!
