Addressing a conflict is the first step towards resolving it

Conflicts at work are commonplace and are rarely a pleasant experience. Yet what could be more constructive than a difference of opinion? And what could be more inspiring than diversity?

A conflict can escalate if recriminations take the place of questioning or honest communication. It risks spreading to others and seriously damaging the working atmosphere.

An entire project can be impacted by a conflict between two people if, for example, they have a different understanding of the applicable standards and how to apply them. In such cases, however, clarification and reconciliation may be enough to clear up misunderstandings and avoid the need for more formal resolution. Sometimes the goal may be to repair a relationship that has broken down. Expressing ourselves and actively listening to each other helps us to get along better. Among colleagues, there is often common ground to be found, and this will frequently bring mutual benefits.

A difficult conversation can turn into a productive one and may even improve the existing relationship. But discord can sometimes set in. If the situation becomes deadlocked and tempers flare, hostility gets the upper hand. In such cases it is advisable to protect oneself, and formal resolution may be the right way to go.

In all cases, the issue that is at the root of the conflict should be addressed as soon as possible: don’t hesitate to seek help from your line manager, the Human Resources Department or the Staff Association and, of course, the Ombud as an impartial third party for informal resolution.

So, if you find yourself in a situation of conflict, don’t wait – contact your Ombud quickly, not as a last resort!

If you would like to discuss this topic or explore how to handle a specific situation, please contact me. My main task is to provide an informal channel for conflict resolution and to offer impartial assistance. My role is also to provide guidance on the application of the Code of Conduct.

Thank you for your attention, and see you soon!
